METAL COATING

Other than stainless steel and anophoresis aluminum, nearly all the metal equipment like automotive parts, garden furnitures, pipes, tanks, water based fire extinguishers and accumulator tanks, are painted with a coating material before use. The objectives of coating are looks, durability and safety but the most important one is corrosion protection.

The main reason of corrosion is the oxidation caused by the attack of various chemicals produced by domestic or traffic originated smoke, bad weather and pollution. Well-known corrosion preventive paints and varnishes like liquid or powder PVC or polyurethane reveal toxic smoke and solvent vapour and they also may supply inadequate protection. Thermoplastic paints go further ahead being profitable by soft touch, noise proof, perfect mechanical and chemical resistance characteristics and since not having solvents they are environment friendly products.

The key of corrosion protection is the perfect adhesion to the metal surface. Corrosion takes place on the metal surface after being exposed to corrosive environment. A holed surface as a result of losses caused by UV or chemical attacks or other mechanical effects may lead to corrosion. In the time of the first exposure to a corrosive encounter, if the paint-surface bond is weak, corrosion develops under the paint. This is highly critical on surfaces like edges and corners where the paint is likely thinner.

That is why coating material should be flexible and tolerant to the dimensional changes caused by temperature differences while having the desired temper grade regarding corrosion resistance, melting index and augmentation characteristics. In addition to these, the paint must have adhered to the metal surface strong enough to block the corrosion develop under.

Flamulit® ve Abcite® are especially designed thermoplastic paints to prevent metal coatings from corrosion. Both the products are registered trade marks of DuPont and are suitable for liquid bed and electrostatic spray applications.

As mentioned before, in line with the growing thermoplastic paint market, they are environment friendly products.

Thermoplastic paint may be applied easily to heated pieces by sinking them in a liquid bed filled with powder paint. This process demands tecnically easy equipment and with experience and mino changes in the system, perfect result may be reached.

While the demand for thermoplastic system (ES) spray paints is rising, with tecniques like Flamulit® ve Abcite®, Corona, Tribo or hot flocking it is easy to apply.

These products may be applied without an undercoet after a classical surface processes like oil removal process. To increase the adhesion, drying may be needed.

Thermoplastic powder paints consist of wire coating applications like, bycicle saddles, supermarket cars and refrigirator shelves. DuPont Polymere Powder Paints has a wide range of product range adequate to customers' special needs beside their resistance to weather conditions, protection from corrosion or mechanical resistance performances.

Typical applications for these products are, pipes and tanks, sign or lamp posts, park and garden furnitures, cable canals, forklift accumulator tanks and automotive accessories. There are also products which have food approval.

Water Based Fire Extinguishers

Portable fire extinguishers require a perfect corrosion prevention in order not to lose functionality since they are filled with water or foam. After the DIN EN 3 regulations are put into service, the requirements for the European Manufacturers have increased. DuPont Polymere Powder Paints, supplying a successful painting system, while protecting from corrosion perfectly, they create an advantage with their low costs.

DuPont products are suggested to be used as thermoplastic first then thermoset for inside and outside surfaces respectively.

Accumulator Tanks

Accumulator acids are highly corrosive especially in submarine, passenger ship and forklift applications.Corrosion prevention is the key to a long-life accumulator.


Special kinds ofFlamulit® paints with standart colors, are developed only for this segment and they proved their success in the market.

For some partial applications, Abcite® may be used.

Wire Applications

Refrigirator shelves, house and kitchen accessory applications are common in this segment.

In principal, PE (polyethylene) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) based paints has the lowest cost. Mostly white color is prefered in this segment. Since PVC requires organic solvent (like MEK) consisting undercoat applications, is not environment firendly. It is prohibited in Europe to use because of the released toxic smoke while the shelves and baskets are being burned.

Pipe Coatings and Tanks

Thermoplastics usage is increasing because of their protection against corrosion. DuPont product groups may be used in 1,2 or 3 layers according to the need and they meet the demand perfectly. Underground pipe heating systems, drinking water pipes, valves and tanks are coated by Flamulit® and Abcite® against acidic and basic chemicals.
